Aston Martin F1 Team: Back to the back?

With two races already done, the 2021 Formula 1 season is proving to be by far the most thrilling one since 2016. Max Verstappen is giving the Mercedes a run for their money and is finally becoming the driver that Red Bull advertised him as: a World Champion Driver!

But, let’s not discuss the obvious. Every F1 fan already is excited about the first rivalry of 2021. Let’s talk about a team; a team that would not want to be in the spotlight today: the Aston Martin F1 Team.
A team with high hopes and high expectations seems to be crushed by their own performance. They sure got away with it in 2020 with a minor penalty, which they could have recovered from. Albeit, the past is past.

What is the Aston Martin F1 Team’s biggest 2021 problem?

Even before the 2021 season began, the Aston Martin F1 Team already had their problems served on a plate. The redesigning of the car!

Now, according to the regulations, teams are not allowed to ‘copycat’ any rival team’s car design or any of the ‘LTC’ parts, the regulation thusly made after the Racing Point’s ‘Pink Mercedes’ controversy. This, combined with the new regulations on downforce levels (redesigned floor, rear brake ducts, diffuser fences) meant that the team had to go back to the drawing board to produce a car that was faster and capable of getting them their most desired podiums.

It has been a rollercoaster of a ride for the Aston Martin F1 Team ever since they found themselves amid a financial crisis back in 2018. The team went from developing and designing some of their best cars to buying information and design ideas from rival teams. If the 2020 season taught us anything in the world of F1, it was the fact that Aston Martin F1 Team (Racing Point as it was known back then) was not handling the situation too well.

Is there any hope in 2021?

Not only are their drivers struggling with the car this season, but Lance Stroll is getting the better half of the misery in contrast to his 4-time World Champion teammate, Sebastian Vettel, who we were excited to see in his new avatar.

To update the words of Lawrence Stroll, the Canadian businessman has taken a team that was 4th on the grid, made it one of the top dogs for one season, and now they are back to their original form.

At least, that’s what it looks like for now.

Can Aston Martin be the strong independent team it once was? It’s surely a test of time for them. So far one thing is certain. Cyril would have been happy given the Aston Martin F1 Team’s current situation.

Karma much?
